ASIC only is capable of mining and only mines one algorithm, i.e. it is limited to a small set of coins or to a single coin alone. For example, ASIC for Bitcoin cannot mine Monero. And vice versa. And GPU can not only mine all coins, but can do many things beyond mining: play games, render 3D models, edit videos, and train neural networks.

GPU’s have diversity on their side, but ASICs win in terms of efficiency. For example, one Innosilicon A10 7 GB mines as much as 7 RTX 3080 video cards, but consumes the same amount of electricity as only 5 of them.

The GPU’s are warm and noisy, but the ASICs are even noisier. 10-20 video cards on a balcony is an acceptable and still comfortable level of noise. 1-2 ASICs is comparable to a vacuum cleaner, meaning all your neighbours won't be able to sleep.

ASICs may be more profitable and efficient, but video cards are easier to start with and safer to continue.

The short answer is: hash rate and power consumption are the same everywhere, there is no advantage anywhere; whichever is more convenient for you, go with it.

There are two big pluses on Windows' side:

• It's already installed on your gaming computer;
• You already know how to use it and you probably know how to reinstall it.

There are thousands of guides and handy tweaking and overclocking software available.

HiveOS and RaveOS are operating systems specifically for miners, all you can do is mine and nothing more. It is definitely not a choice for a home computer, but a great solution for a balcony farm.

The main advantage is that it has Linux inside. In other words, we get a more stable and predictable operating system with less video memory consumption. Windows has its own enormous appetites, so 4 GB video cards can no longer mine Ravencoin there, but under Linux these cards will mine for a few more months.

Our opinion is that for 1-3 home rigs the best way is not to experiment and stay with familiar Windows, 4-10 — as you feel more convenient, and further one should definitely look in the direction of specialized solutions like HiveOS and RaveOS.

Kryptex — speaking the same language as miners!

In the previous post we talked about the difference between Kryptex Pool and Kryptex App, but what if you want to get convenient payouts in bitcoins or to your bank card, but don't want to mine via app or even need linux?

You can receive payouts to your Kryptex account without the Kryptex app! When connecting to our pools, just use your email in Kryptex instead of your wallet address.

The main difference is how you want to receive your payouts:

The Kryptex app will determine which coin you want to mine on your computer, configure and run it all by itself. Dual mining isn't a problem at all! You don't need to set anything up, the application will take care of everything automatically. You only have to choose the method and currency of payment on the website.

On the pool you have to do everything yourself: set up the mining, register a wallet, choose which coin is the most profitable to mine, find a place to exchnage your crypto. But most importantly, you need to store and exchange all the obtained cryptocurrency yourself. For example, if you mine Ravencoin, you can only get payment in Ravencoin.
